    Shedd's Underwater Robotics program introduces teachers and students to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) principles through the development and application of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to investigate aquatic environments. The Underwater Robotics Club provides educators with the knowledge, materials (an ROV kit worth of $1,000) and support to run their own after-school robotics clubs. The program ends with a fun-filled poolside event for teachers and students to test their ROVs.     Oregon Sea Grant coordinates an annual underwater robotics competition that tests students' engineering and problem-solving skills and aims to prepare them for technical careers. The event, known as the Oregon Regional MATE ROV Competition, is one of about 30 regional contests around the world in which students qualify for the annual international competition.     This video presents the development and motion control strategies for a small bio-inspired underwater robot that employs a pair of undulatory fins for propulsion. Each fin is comprised of three individually actuated fin rays, which are interconnected by an elastic membrane. An on-board microcontroller (Arduino Mega 2560) generates the rays’ motion pattern that result in the fins’ undulations, through which propulsion is obtained. The prototype, which is fully untethered and energetically autonomous, also integrates an IMU/AHRS unit (Advanced Navigation Orientus) for navigation purposes, a wireless communication module, and an on-board video camera.     Russian President Vladimir Putin could soon have an ocean-going robotized system at his disposal that can mimic the characteristics of different submarines, making it useful for naval exercises as well as reconnaissance missions. The Surrogat, an autonomous, unmanned submarine powered by lithium-ion batteries that can operate for 15 to 16 hours at a time, is being developed by military designers from Russia’s Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering, Russian news agency TASS reports. The drone measures more than 50 feet long and weighs almost 40 tons, with a maximum diving depth of almost 2,000 feet. Russian President Vladimir Putin could soon have an ocean-going robotized system at his disposal that can mimic the characteristics of different submarines, making it useful for naval exercises as well as reconnaissance missions. The Surrogat, an autonomous, unmanned submarine powered by lithium-ion batteries that can operate for 15 to 16 hours at a time, is being developed by military designers from Russia’s Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering, Russian news agency TASS reports. The drone measures more than 50 feet long and weighs almost 40 tons, with a maximum diving depth of almost 2,000 feet. It can employ towed sonar arrays to simulate another submarine’s acoustic and electromagnetic fields and imitate both conventional and nuclear submarines. The Surrogat can also be used for underwater terrain mapping and reconnaissance. Military designers claim the drone is simple to operate, with low maintenance and upgrade costs. Transcript: Meet the robotic snake of your nightmares. It's called the Eelume robot. Several Norwegian companies are collaborating to develop it for monitoring underwater equipment. The Eelume will hopefully reduce the need for big and pricey maintenance vessels. Its slender body can access hard-to-reach areas and even do some light work, like cleaning and adjusting valves. The robot will supposedly spend its whole life on the sea floor, though it looks like it needs a power source to work, for now. Let's just hope it doesn't get any ideas from "Terminator." Alan with the U.S. NAVY at DARPA's Tech Expo shows us some tricked up and easy to build SeaPerch ROV subs with GoPro and other cameras for underwater driving fun and learning. "SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in an in-school or out-of-school setting. Students build the ROV from a kit comprised of low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme. The SeaPerch Program provides students with the opportunity to learn about robotics, engineering, science, and mathematics (STEM) while building an underwater ROV as part of a science and engineering technology curriculum. Throughout the project, students will learn engineering concepts, problem solving, teamwork, and technical applications. Where the name “SeaPerch” came from? We asked the inventor of the original SeaPerch, Mr. Harry Bohm, and he shared the story with us. Mr. Bohm explains that the name SeaPerch came from the USS Perch, a highly decorated World War II U.S. submarine. USS Perch was one of a new breed of American submarines and was the first to incorporate an early form of air conditioning. She was launched May 9, 1936 by the Electric Boat Company in Groton, CT and was scuttled by her crew in the Java Sea on March 3, 1942 after being severely damaged during a Japanese depth charge attack two days earlier. The crew was captured and sent to a Japanese prisoner of war camp; all but six of the 54 men and five officers onboard returned home after the war. Her wreckage was discovered in November 2006 by an international team of divers off the coast of Java and was the object of archeological diver exploration.
